breaking news this morning, we are live on this scene of the deadly overnight fire in northeast baltimore. we're going to tell you who made it out and what firefighters found inside. students at sandy hook elementary return to class this morning. we'll get a preview of what

they can expect when the school doors open. also students in one annapolis school return to class after a terrifying morning. what investigators have to say about the explosion that rocked the building. those stories straight ahead on this thursday morning, thank you for joining us. i'm megan pringle. >> and i'm charlie crowson. a cold start to the thursday morning. very cold. it hurt today. >> it did. make sure those kids have their gloves and their mittens as they head to the bus stop right lynette? >> exactly. don't forget the hat as well because we want to keep the heat in definitely. as we look at the temperatures we can see 20s across the bard here right? we can -- board right? and we should be at 25, 24 degrees now for this aim of the year -- time of the year. a lot of o temperatures coming in -- the temperatures coming in below average. now maryland's most powerful radar it is dry. and we have all the sweeps on we're scanning the skies trying to see if we're going to get any type of rain or snow and that's not going to happen. we will be dry this morning and that will continue through the

afternoon and also evening. the planner well, still stays cold. 27 degrees when you're waking up around can. by 10:00 temperature at the freezing degree mark and just a few degrees above that by lunchtime. let's get a check now of the abc2 timesaver traffic with lauren cook. good morning. good morning lynette. well we have a crash to tell you about right in baltimore city. this one is on west pa taps key avenue right at annapolis road. this is what 95 looks like at the fort mchenry tunnel. traffic moving eight along, no problems whatsoever. looking at the eight minute road to the teleplay is a. the other -- toll plaza. the other drive times, 695 no delays on the east side. 11 minutes on the outer loop from 95 all the way up to 83. and the west side nice and clear 11 minutes as well on the outer loop from 795 all the way down to 95. megan and charlie, over to you. we're now following breaking news for you on this thursday morning. and this is not the way you want to start the new year. two people are dead in a house

fire and that house completely destroyed in northeast baltimore. this morning abc2 news linda so is live on the scene at meant bellow terrace -- montebello terrace with the very latest on this. >> reporter: the fire broke out just down the road in one of the homes up there. this is the 3,000 block of montebello terrace, this morning when we spoke to a fire investigator, he said two men died in the fire. five people made it out safely including the pregnant woman. the first victim was found inside the house on the first floor. the second victim was discovered outside right by the basement door in the back of the house. we're hearing reports that victim may have gotten out safely but was trying to get back inside when he died. the fire broke out just after 11:30 last night in the 3,000 block of montebello terrace. that's right off harford road. and right behind the safeway. when firefighters got here, the fire was so intense they couldn't make it inside.

a second alarm was killed and firefighters eventually were able to get inside. that's when they discovered the body of the first victim. now the five people who made it out safely including the pregnant woman. they all had nonlife- threatening injuries. three of those people were taken to the hospital for evaluation. fire arson investigators dit look over the house as standard protocol to determine what caused this fire. we don't know at this point if the home had working smoke detectors, the fire department does want to tell if you you need a smoke detector in your house, just call 311. for thes will come out and in-- firefighters will come out and install one for free. linda so, abc2 news. right now, it's been about three weeks since the massacre at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut when a gunman killed 20 students and six adults there and today the students head back to class this time at a different school. abc2 news' sherrie johnson is

live this morning in towson. >> reporter: yes, megan we are here live at baltimore county public schools. they have a new program here where they have officers that are patrolling schools. it's all a part of the keep a check program at all baltimore county schools that do not have a school resource officer assigned directly to the school. officers are stopping by the schools during each shift to ensure that everything is safe and secure. the school shooting in newtown that left 26 people dead including 20 young children has districts on alert and baltimore county the superintendent says there are security plans in place. dr. dance says they are considering enhanced security options that ore districts are using like badges for all staff and students as well as cameras and a buzz in policy at the doors. in howard county the superintendent there says their looking -- they're looking at security upgrades for their schools as welt. her team looked at potential

vulnerabilities in the system identifying at least two schools that need physical changes. she says newtown is an important reason to update safety plans and procedures. i talked to baltimore county police and they will be patrolling the schools with that resource officers until further notice. reporting live in towson, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. it will be business as usual at baits middle school in annapolis. a boiler room caught on fire and it actually caused an explosion that rocked the kill. two maintenance men were hurt but they will be okay. all the students were fine. district officials have run air quality tests and they determined that the building is safe for students to return to class today. police in one missouri town are no longer allowed to go to the denny's on duty. earlier this week they went in to order food and they got the order to leave unless they got rid of the weapons. the manager approached the plain clothes detectives after a customer noticed one of the officers had a gun. the officers identified themselves as detectives but the manager still told them to go or lose the weapons.

>> as they were leaving, another manager came out and said they're police officers, it's okay. but they decided at that point they'd had -- they'd been harassed enough. they'd been embarrassed more than enough. so they exited the restaurant. >> denny's apologized released a statement saying in part quote denny's policy permits law enforcement officials to carry their firearms inside the restaurant and we regret any misunderstanding. the newspaper that published the online interactive map of handgun permit holders in two suburban new york counties has hired armed guards to protect the office. this comes after negative backlash from the map publication. the presence at journal news comes after gun owning blogger christopher fountain posted the home addresses of the newspaper staffers on his blog. a passenger was dead upon arrival at a houston airport. houston police say the 25-year- old woman died on afflict from

brazil and her death right now is under investigation. the airline says that the flight to dallas was diverted to houston because of the sick passenger. it did not share any details about the illness but said efforts were made on board to save that woman's life. maybe just a sign of the season but this morning, there is another incident of something falling through the pond. >> this time it's not a person. it's a puppy. we're going to show you how firefighters rescued this little guy from the icy waters. >> who hasn't been annoyed by robo calls? now, you have a chance to do something about it. you're going to see how your government is taking your input on this growing problem.

thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. we seem to be seeing a lot of these lately. another dramatic rescue on the frozen pond? it's all caught on camera. >> this time not a human needing help. it's a dog. the puppy fell through a partially frozen water in missouri. one firefighter strapped on waders and walked into the pond with a basket. he eventually coaxed the dog to come to him and then pulled the animal to safety. the dog was given oxygen and a number of warm blankets needed after something like that. lynette. we see this all the time. we had a story about it

5:46 right now. the restaurant in federal hill is facing some pretty serious charges this morning. matthew lasinski is accused of raping a woman in the bathroom on new year's eve. according to police the woman said she had self-drinks at light street at the restaurant. while in the bathroom she claims she was sexually assaulted by the 29-year-old. police say the woman was treated and released at an area

hospital. the restaurant put a statement about the allegations in part reading one of our team members has become the victim of the worst injustice i've seen in my lifetime. we have video as well as witnesses that directly contradict the accuser's allegations yet he's still being charged. what happened to innocent until proven guilty. many families are telling the theater's owner no, they don't want the see a true -- to see a free movie there. they say sin mark invited them for an evening of remembrance and a free movie. >> that is a blatant lack of respect for the families. they're looking to boost their -- boost their own ticket sales with the grand reopening to the public. >> the mayor of aurora sent a statement saying the theater's reopening may be painful for some but healing for overs. he says that's why it's important families have a choice in that matter. pretty alarming stat for

you this morning. for those of you who travel by plane, more than 1500 weapons found by airport screener last year. that's up 200 from 2011. atlanta's airport had the most with 80 guns found through november. that's followed by dallas, phoenix, and houston. not clear if the increase is because more people are traveling with weapons or the tsa screeners and new technologies are doing a better job finding them. time now for five things to know on this thursday morning. u.p.s. is expecting more than half a million packages being shipped back to retailers today. people will be sending back the things they got over the holidays and either didn't fit, didn't like, or didn't want. starbucks wants you to kick the habit of throwing away the paper cups. starting today the chain is selling $1 reusable plastic cups to cut down on waste. the eco-friendly cups will look familiar and similar to those paper versions bearing the starbucks logo. detroit officials are expected to release the city's crime stats later today for 2012. it's poised to see the highest

murder rate in nearly 20 years. roughly 53 homicides per 100,000 residents staggering numbers. mediation talks between the nhl and players went well into the night but still no agreement has been reached. neither side is saying if any progress is being made. the nhl commissioner says a deal must be reached by january 11th for the 48 game season to be played. the 113th congress will be sworn in today. vice president joe biden will preside over the swearing in ceremony for the senators. that's set for this afternoon. the house will also convene and choose this term's speaker. all right, we've all dealt with it before. the phone rings and you pick it up and it's a prerecorded message and always seems to be when maybe you're doing something important. the federal trade commission is looking for solutions to combat these robo calls. they're running a contest to find the best idea. if you win, you get $50,000 and a trip to washington, d.c. to present your solution.
